communities, wives, daughters,
sisters and mothers are killed for the least sexual indiscretion and upon
the slightest suspicion of adultery. In Sindh this merciless killing is given
the title of “Karo Kari” in the local terminology. The Karo Kari
tradition decrees that the family whose honor has been offended should kill
the man and the woman involved in an illicit relationship. However, in practice
the victims of this tradition are mostly women.
Under this custom, the male family members who carryout the killing neither
refer to the formal judicial system to prove the case, nor do they need valid
proof of the allegation. Even slightest suspicion of illicit relations of
any woman can result in her killing by her close relatives including father,
brother, husband, and sometimes even cousin. With the growing trend of Karo
Kari in the society, presently killing of women with other motives are also
usually camouflaged as Karo Kari killings as this bails out the murderers
from the severe punishment. Hypothetically following observations with regard
to karo kari killings are common.
Besides Karo Karo there are many other forms of violence against women including
wife beating, sale of women in the name of marriage, exchange marriages, marrying
women off to settle the old tribal disputes, marriages in very small age etc.
The key causes of violence against women is the lack of awareness among the
local communities as under the tribal systems the centuries old anti women
traditions have been continued by giving them color of religion and tribal
pride. However, again there are issues of lack of clear understanding of the
gender issues as well as the issues of honor killing, lack of skills and capacities.
The key objective of this project is to create awareness and enhance the capacity,
skills and networking of the local communities, civil society and local governments
to enable them to play their due role in preventing the growing incidents
of violence against women in Sindh province.
To properly address the issues of awareness, skills and networking the project
seeks to launch massive awareness campaign in the 12 districts of Sindh and
Baluchistan which are more vulnerable with regard to the cases of violence
against women and also develop the skills and capacities of youth and local
communities and develop their strong networking to play their key role in
preventing the cases of violence against women in Sindh.
Youth of a nation are considered the main powerful pillars of a community,
as they are more responsive, active and dynamic in the field of life. The
project seeks to include the youth and the local communities as key stakeholders
in the project activities right from union council to tehsil and district
level to ensure greater participation and inclusion in the project activities
leading to the success of project activities.
The key role in the local level project activities including awareness raising of youth and local communities, their capacity building and empowering in them skills to fight against honor killing. The local level awareness campaigns etc would be played by the youth forums of the 12 districts of Sindh and Baluchistan.

WAKE UP!!! Campaign against honor killing
Violence affects the lives
of millions of women worldwide, in all socio economic and educational classes.
It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impeding the right of women
to participate fully in society.
Violence against women takes dismaying varieties of forms however Sindh and
Baluchistan province of Pakistan harbors a special category of violence against
women known as "honor killings.” In fact honor killing is an archaic
custom deeply rooted in the tribal societies of Balochistan and Sindh, as
