PDI to Organize National Consultative Workshop on World Bank South Asian Climate Change Strategy

Climate change has emerged as the key threat to the biodiversity and the natural livelihood resources of the world. With the sudden increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters including droughts, earthquakes, cyclones and tsunamis, the global debate with regard to climate change and its relationship with the growing disasters has been taking strong roots.

One of the key elements of such debate is the role of multinational lending agencies including World Bank, Asian Development Bank, JIDA and others in the increased level of climate change in the world. Lately, many mega projects funded by World Bank have been severely criticized on their negative contribution towards global warming and climate change.

As the civil society pressures increased on the global lending agencies to ensure that their investments should not be at the cost of risk to the globe, there has been a positive moves of developing strategies by those agencies to look at the environmental aspects of their projects and take steps towards reducing the environmental impacts of their project and also improve their institutional contribution towards reducing global warming effects. The latest move in this regard is the preparation of draft of South Asia Climate Change Strategy by Word Bank. World Bank is presently seeking the comments of civil society, governments and other stakeholders on the draft, which would be finalized on the basis of those comments.

Considering World Bank as a key player in the global debate of the climate change Participatory Development Initiatives [PDI] has decided to prepare comprehensive civil society feedback on the strategy. For that purpose PDI intends to organize “National Consultative Workshop on World Bank South Asian Climate Change Strategy” on Wednesday March 25, 2009 in Karachi, with the support of Oxfam GB. Those interested to participate in the workshop can write for invitation to PDI to participatory@gmail.com .
