At the formation of this Society PDI organized a grand event “Launching Ceremony of Kharo Chan Fishermen Cooperative Society” at Kharo Chan Port in District Thatta. During the course of launching ceremonial speeches, speakers lighted upon the fate of irony and ignorance of Government with fishing communities of Sindh in general and of District Thatta in particular. They remembered the days when people of Kharo Chan and Thatta were prosperous in agriculture, livestock and fishing and the lush greenery had fascinated the tourists. They said since the natural catastrophes and cyclone have vanished out the infrastructure of the area on one hand and the stoppage of sweet water in Indus Delta has ruined the lush greenery and fertility of land and has brought about the day to day depletion in the livelihood of people on other hand. On this alarming situation persons in power had not taken any serious effort for the betterment of the area they added. At present in such circumstances, the establishment of Fishermen Cooperative Society by PDI with the support of Government of Sindh is the first step towards the struggle for betterment in the area that will bring positive impacts on the livelihood of people, speakers said.

In the last, PDI representative briefed about the composition of FCS and its role and responsibilities to the participants. It was shared that FCS will struggle for the provision of safe drinking water to the area and it will provide fish catch material to the local fishermen on reasonable rates and a vehicle for transportation of fish from port to Karachi Fisheries on cheaper rates to the fishermen. Moreover, it was added that the linkages of FCS will be developed with concerned line departments so that it may raise the voice of fishermen at National and International level.
