Livestock Vaccination Camps held at DRM Project Area Khuzdar
The vaccination campaign of livestock has been the most crucial objective of Community Based Disaster Risk Management and Livelihood Program as in project area seasonal diseases outbreaks in cattle bring about sudden deaths and killings providing little time for treatment and ultimately cause heavy financial and emotional loss on the livelihood of pastoralists/ farmers.
Keeping the above scenario insight, PDI, in August 2009, under its Community Based Disaster Risk Management Project supported by Oxfam EC, organized eight livestock camps in three focused union councils – Sasol, Tootak and Manyalove of Khuzdar with the technical support of District Livestock Department. Before camps were organized PDI, along with technical staff of district livestock department i.e. doctor and vaccinators, conducted baseline survey of the targeted union councils regarding identification of common diseases in the area and focal points/ venues for vaccination camps. During survey, vaccination campaign was also launched to sensitize the local people to bring forward their cattle for vaccination. The common diseases like Plloronimonia, Introta Keesmia, Liver Flock and and Lung Worm were identified as common in the area and with mutual consent of the communities eight different focal points/ venues i.e. Bidrang and Karaz in UC Sasol, Gasdi, Sardari Shaher and Addah in UC Tootak and Pashta khan Bant, kili Mangle Abad, Tajdeen, Akroo in UC Manyalove were identified in order to ease the cattle’s mobility for vaccination.
At above venues, vaccination camps were held and 6014 sheep and goats of the area were vaccinated with the breakup of 3542 in UC Sasol, 1139 in UC Tootak and 1333 in UC Manyalove.
In the arrangements of vaccination camps, the support of district livestock Department has been remarkable as they provided not only technical support to PDI but vaccines against diseases for 2000 goats/ sheep, seasonal calendars for vaccination and support in identification diseases were also provided by them.
